The Sacral Chakra is the second of the seven chakras. It is located just below the navel, right in the center of your lower belly and in your back it is located in the lumbar spine and associated with the colour orange and the element, water. Some of its corresponding body areas and organs are the genitals, lower back and abdominal.
The sacral chakra is the centre of emotions, feelings and stimulates pleasure. It plays an active role in our sexuality and expression of our sexual needs and desires.

A person who has an imbalance, or an under active sacral chakra could have behaviours that are ruled by depression, detachment, indulgent, aggressive, over sensitive, fear, anxiety and poor boundaries. Physical symptoms such as anemia, hypoglycaemia, lower back pain, joint problems, low energy, spleen and kidney issues and premenstrual syndrome can also be a result of an imbalance of the sacral chakra.
Is my sacral chakra unbalanced?
Sit down in a quiet room where you can relax and be free of any interruptions. Make sure your feet are firmly on the floor if sitting on a chair. If you are sitting on the floor ensure what you are sitting on your sit bones and your spine is tall.
Close your eyes down to a soft gaze and begin by taking some deep breaths. Once you feel relaxed, ask yourself the following questions, answer them honestly, see what resonates with you, do you feel stuck answering any of them? Allow this to guide you and help you learn about yourself and whether you have any blockages in your second chakra.
In what areas do you allows yourself to experience pleasure?
In what areas do you not allow yourself to experience pleasure?
Do you feel creative and sensual?
How often do you do things that you really enjoy?
How often do you do things that you really do not enjoy?
When you do things for others is it a true genuine gesture or are you trying to win their approval or love?
Do you have co-dependent relationships? How do you contribute to them?
Do you always want more from life or are you content with what you have?
Do you experience jealousy?
Do you allow life to be easy or do you believe you have to struggle and sacrifice and that everything is a challenge?
How do I balance my sacral chakra?
Exercise, dance – MOVE !!
Using essential oils such as patchouli, ylang-ylang, bergamot, sandalwood, clary sage, jasmine, orange and rose.
Meditate – visualise the colour orange to heal and activate the sacral chakra.
Introduce subtle or bright shades of orange into your life, your office and home to help heal and active the energy flow through the sacra. Orange clothes, or jewellery is a great way to introduce it to your life.
Learn to let go. Emotional baggage can really tire us out and weigh us down. Whether it’s writing a journal (read our guide to writing a journal) LINK TO JOURNAL BLOG or talking to a close friend, it’s amazing how much better and lighter you can feel once you have vocalised or made your issues heard and let go of your repressed emotions.
As water is the element of the sacral chakra, go for a swim, sit by a pool or sea or just run yourself a beautiful bath with something essential oils.
Yoga – the sacral chakra is associated with our ability to express emotions and experience pleasure. A lot of our emotions are stored in our hips therefore hip opening exercises will be extremely beneficial.

Healing foods:
Foods that are are rich in sources of healthy fats are very nourishing for the sacral chakra. Fish, nuts and seeds such as flax, poppy, sesame, hemp, pumpkin and sunflower seeds are extremely therapeautic for this chakra. Orange foods such as oranges, carrots, sweet potatoes, peaches, apricots, mangos, papayas, pumpkin and mandarins are all healing foods for the sacral chakra.
