Pilates is a method of exercise that consists of low-impact flexibility and muscular strength and endurance movements. Pilates emphasises proper postural alignment, core strength and muscle balance. Pilates is named after its creator, Joseph Pilates, who developed the exercises in the 1920s.

The health benefits of Pilates include improved flexibility, increased muscle strength and tone, particularly of your abdominal muscles, lower back, hips and buttocks (the ‘core muscles’ of your body) … enhanced muscular control of your back and limbs.

Because Pilates can be modified to provide either a gentle strength training program or a challenging workout, most people would have no problem with this form of exercise. … It’s a good idea when you’re just starting out in Pilates to go to classes, and to let your teacher know you are new. They will offer modifications and help so you are able to understand the postures and where you should feel it in the body.
